When Houstonians talk about where they are in Houston, they classify themselves as being either inside or outside I-610 also know as the 610 Loop. This includes the central business district, West University, Southside Place and most of Bellaire.  The outer areas of Houston, and also the rest of Bellaire, the suburbs, the airports and basically everything else is called "outside the loop".  The other "wheel" road is Beltway 8 also know as the "Beltway", the encircles the City of Houston another five miles further out. The newest one which isn't complete is the "Grand Parkway", it is roughly 10 miles out from the inner loop on the outer most suburbs which include Katy, Sugarland, up to The Woodlands area. click here for map.

Houston has four bayous passing through the city.  The Buffalo Bayou, which runs downtown, the Brays Bayou, which runs along the Medical Center (Texas), the White Oak Bayou which runs throught the Heights and some of the northwest area and the last major bayou is the Sims Bayou in the southern part of Houston which goes to downtown Houston into the Ship Channel.  The Ship Channel goes past Galveston, TX into the Gulf of Mexico.

The highest elevation in the city is the Houston Heights.  Most of Houston, is very flat and has mostly CLAY on the ground.
